Founded in California in 1973 by outdoorist Yvon Chouinard, Patagonia began life as a small company that made tools for climbers, but soon became a global leader of two intertwined values: outdoor performance and comfort and ethical business practices and manufacturing methods, of which it must be considered a global pioneer across all consumer facing industries. The sports to which Patagonia dedicates itself – climbing, skiing, snowboarding, surfing, fly fishing, mountain biking and trail running – are all ‘silent sports’ i.e. practiced without use of motors. Patagonia’s clothing, from down jackets, to fleeces to wetsuits and rainshells, reflect this: it is minimal, with a bias for simplicity, utility and durability, constructed where possible with recycled (or recyclable) fabrics and always easily repairable.
