Founded in Tokyo in 1996 by Tetsu Nishiyama and one of the key players in the early Harajuku Uru Hara movement, WTAPS was and continues to be heavily inspired by military wear. Unlike other brands that tend to transform military inspirations into new, barely recognizable styles, WTAPS hues as close to the original as possible, accentuating the design language of the original reference in a philosophy that is succinctly described on the brand’s labels as “placing things where they should be”. Over the years the underlying subcultural relevance of WTAPS to the street scene has been highlighted by epochal collaborations with partners such as Supreme, Porter, and Carharrt WIP. Slam Jam – which has been selling WTAPS since 1998 - remains one of a select club of only 16 worldwide stockists of the brand.
